How to Read a Well-Made Ring Before You Buy
The tells that separate a ring built to last from one built to sell, and the check almost everyone skips.

The first tell is the back of the setting. Turn a ring over and look at the gallery, the open metalwork under the stones. On a well-made piece it is finished as carefully as the front, with clean bright cuts and no rough casting bumps. Sloppy undersides are where corners get cut, because most buyers never look there.

Prongs are the next check. Count them, then feel them. Four or six prongs should sit tight against the girdle of each stone, tipped over just enough to hold without burying the diamond. If a prong snags a cloth or wiggles under a fingernail, the stone is one knock from loosening. Pavé should feel smooth across the top, with beads that are round and even, not mashed flat.

Metal marks tell you what you are paying for. A stamp of 14K, 585, 18K, or 750 names the gold content, and a maker's mark beside it signals a shop willing to sign its work. A ring set with stones but carrying no karat stamp deserves a hard question.

Papers matter more for the stones than the mounting. A grading report from GIA or another independent lab describes a diamond's carat weight, color, and clarity, VS and SI grades included, so you are not taking a seller's word for it. Smaller accent stones usually travel without paperwork, and that is normal. A center stone over roughly half a carat with no report is worth pausing on.

Weight in the hand is a quieter signal. Hollow shanks and thin, springy bands feel light and bend over time. A solid shank has a reassuring density and holds its round shape through years of wear.

The check most people skip is the inside of the band under a loupe. Real hallmarks are struck crisp and slightly recessed. Laser-etched fakes look gray and floaty, sitting on the surface rather than punched into it. Thirty seconds with a ten-power loupe there settles most doubts before money changes hands.
